I AM WOMAN

From birth I was a woman,

I shall live and die a woman,

Even then without a breast,

I suckled at the breast of another woman,

I learned at the feet of another woman,

I became what I am, I am a woman.

I fear not emotion as a woman,

I embrace my capacity have and to show emotion,

I fear not the dismal models of “You cannot.”

As they cannot fit me nor I them,

I fear not the unschooled notion of “that is how they all are.”

What I fear is the immense power I possess as a woman.

I am a woman never falsetto,

I need not for another’s pleasure don stiletto,

I need not the cosmetic trappings of makeup,

I am in myself a definition in beauty,

I need not conform to what “they” want,

I am a phenomenon that is a woman.

I am a gateway of life,

I birth civilizations, beings,

I am honored and chosen,

I give purpose and direction,

I nurse and comfort,

I am rooted and support.

I am priceless, a treasure,

I am a queen, I advise,

I am a partner, a helper,

I am more than what I allow myself to be,

I am to be lawfully wedded,

Never haphazardly bedded.

I am your mother, your sister,

I am your friend, your wife,

I am your workmate, your boss,

I am your maid, your daughter,

I am your confidant, your neighbor,

I am your missing rib, your woman.
